Introduction
The
history of the Green Africa Group
dates back to 1992 when one of the shipping industry’s most
admired and respected figures, Captain JJ Chen, established Green
Africa Shipping at the request of the Evergreen Marine Corporation. It
was the first in a line of companies that he’d create to
service
South Africa’s burgeoning import and export market.
After the transition to democracy in 1994, the country became part of
the international mainstream, and after years of isolation and
sanctions, the economy took off. With it, grew the demand for
world-class competencies and services in the areas of shipping and
logistics.
From an initial base of two shareholders and 20 employees, the Green
Africa Group today employs over 260 permanent staff, with indirect
employment estimated at well over the 1 000 mark.
Led by Captain Chen until his untimely passing in 2005, and now in the
capable and proven hands of his two sons, George and Timmy, the Green
Africa Group is the sum of its parts and its passions. While the
organisation is built on the foundations of family legacy and
traditional values, entrepreneurial spirit and visionary leadership
have shaped it.
The Group, which has added a new company, service or property to its
portfolio nearly every year since it started, is carefully planned and
structured to provide a range of integrated solutions that cover
virtually every aspect of the supply chain – and beyond.
Broadening that coverage and adding to the 360º investment
company
proposition is the task of Group Chief Executive, George Chen, and
Group Financial Director, Zain Davids.
Group companies are leaders in their respective sectors.
